Fake It Like You've Been On Holiday

Rimmel Sun Shimmer, Dove Summer Glow
If you're like me and you hate having pale skin then I'm sure that fake tan is your best friend. I have tried countless tanning products over the years from when I first started wearing it, from St Tropez even down to Wilkos' own brand. It's difficult finding the perfect tan- a lot of them either come out green, have a horrible smell or wash off with the slightest bit of rain, and sometimes it's almost enough to put me off tanning altogether. That being said, with many different brands bringing out new and improved tanning formulas, it's hard to resist.

In recent years I've taken the approach that with tanning you get what you pay for so it's worth paying a little more for a higher end brand that provides you with a good quality, natural tan. However not too long ago I came across the new Rimmel Self Tan Mousse on offer for £4.99 (normal price £7.99). It promotes itself as non-smelling, colour lasting and quick drying which are the 3 mains things that I look for in a fake tan, so I was really intrigued to try it out.

I've been using this on and off for a couple of months now and I'm so incredibly impressed with it, especially for the price! After exfoliating, I squirt the mousse onto a mitt and apply all over. It has a colour guide so you can see exactly where you're applying in order to avoid streaks and also means that it can be used as an instant tan too. It dries almost instantly so it can be tricky to rub it in quick enough but it just takes a bit of practice. The colour then develops over the next hour, although I prefer to leave it on overnight and wash off the next day. I was so happy to wake up and find that it left absolutely no stains on my white bed sheets and there was barely a trace of smell either.
Rimmel Sun Shimmer, Dove Summer Glow

As with most instant fake tans that I use, I like to apply Dove Summer Glow over the top to improve longevity. It doesn't alter the colour but it really does make it last longer. Unfortunately Summer Glow still has that telltale smell so even though Rimmel's tan doesn't have a strong scent itself, I still end up smelling of biscuits until I shower. However if you're applying Rimmel's tan on its own there should only be the faintest of smells.
When I washed the tan off the next day it  had left my skin a lovely golden tone and looked very natural. It advises to apply this once a week for 3 weeks to build up the colour however I would rather apply this for 3 consecutive days to get the colour as deep as I can in a shorter space of time. It lasted really well throughout the week, giving me a lovely sunkissed glow which was so easy to achieve. I  like to leave it on for around a week from the first application before exfoliating to remove and starting over.

This has become my go-to fake tan for the weekdays as it's so easy to use and doesn't require much maintenance. I love walking around looking like I've just had a week away in the sun!

Have you tried Rimmel's new tan yet?

love Katya x

  7. I love the Dove Summer Glow lotion - since I'm quite pale it gives me enough colour and is very light and buildable ;) Although they could improve the scent a bit, wouldn't you say? ;)

If you'd like you could check out my new blog arabesque - I'd be honored ;)

    1. The smell definitely lets Summer Glow down. Otherwise it's such a great gradual tan! I'll happily take a look at your blog :)

  9. I've not tried this new tan yet! For an instant tan I head to St Moriz mousse, and like you I prefer to build up the colour over a few days and not weeks. But the colour of this is a lot more natural than the tan I use, so will definitely be picking this up, thanks for the recommendation :) x

  13. I gave up fake tan in the winter (for the first time in years) but I'm starting to get back into it now; I had a bottle of St Tropez Dark Mousse knocking about that I'm dreading using up and having to shell out 30 odd quid to repurchase so I might give the Rimmel a go first. I love the Dove gradual one, too.

    1. I am a fan of St Tropez! You're right though...I dread reaching the end and having to spend so much on a new bottle. I end up using it so sparingly! This is a nice cheap alternative!

  22. This product sounds great. I'm normally as pale as it gets, so I'm kinda afraid of trying fake tan in fear of looking like an orange when done, but this product doesn't seem to be to overpowering in color, so I might try this out if I ever get tired of my pale skin ;-)
